This is the first in a new series of Occasional Papers to be produced by the Southampton Institute of Maritime Law. It is based on a lecture given to the Gothenburg Maritime Law Association in December, 1985. LEGAL DECISIONS 1987 by Thomas Miller & Co., 26 Creechurch Lane, London EC3A 5BA (1988, vii and 65 pp., plus 13 pp. Index). Paperback £5. This is an annual collection of succinct summaries of selected decisions prepared by one of the leading P. & I. Clubs but also available, along with previous years’ volumes, to other interested parties. The Club has declared it to be a particular concern of the current volume to identify areas of the law which have been left uncertain by the courts or which have been left certain but with consequences which can create problems in practice. This is done by outlining the circumstances and decisions of the cases discussed. A cumulative index of the subject-matter dealt with throughout this 11-year-old series is included.
MARITIME AFFAIRS—A WORLD HANDBOOK edited by Henry W. Degenhardt. Longman Group Ltd., Harlow (1985, viii and 390 pp., plus 20 pp. Index). Hardback £50. This book is designed to be a reference guide to maritime organizations, Conventions and disputes and to the international politics of the sea. Its chapters are devoted to the law of the sea; major international organizations, Conventions and agreements; international agreements and organizations relating to shipping; the resources of the ocean; environmental and scientific interest in the sea; maritime boundary disputes; and the military dimension of the sea. The first Appendix is constituted by the text of the UNCLOS Convention, the only Convention reproduced verbatim in the book and the only item occupying a substantial amount of space. The greater part of the book is like a mini-encyclopaedia—albeit not a definitive one—of information of general concern to maritime lawyers. Thus, there are potted accounts of the Kiel Canal, of individual IMO Conventions and of the International Maritime Bureau; tables of fishing catches and world fleet statistics; and a wealth of information
