The present publication is one of several Industry Reports published by Lloyd’s of London Press in recent years covering a range of practical and topical legal issues. This Report is divided in to two parts. The first part, prepared by Patrick Devine, is divided into three chapters explaining the general principles of the Treaty of Rome with specific reference to insurance; the second chapter explains Council Directive 77/92/EEC, on Insurance Agents and Brokers, while the third chapter examines Commission Recommendation 92/48/EEC on Insurance Intermediaries. Part 1 is followed by appendices containing the full text of the Directive and the Recommendation, together with a list of the competent authorities and bodies in each Member State to whom applications must be made by those who wish to pursue the activities of insurance intermediary. Also included are the DTI’s Guidance Notes and Application Form for the European Community Certificate of Experience. Part 2 contains the questionnaire sent out by the editor to lawyers in private practice in the other eleven Member States and the replies submitted by the specialist commentators.
