BERKSHIRE UNIT FINED 1235,000 FOR WORKERS’ COMP OVERCHARGES

The Continental Indemnity unit of Berkshire Hathaway’s Applied Underwriters subsidiary has been fined $335,000 by the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation and ordered to reimburse $352,000 to 16 local small businesses for overcharging them for workers’ compensation cover. A departmental investigation found that Continental overcharged companies for workers’ comp premiums from 2007 to 2015. Reimbursements are to range from around $900 to nearly $56,000. The department said that Nebraska-based Continental has acknowledged the errors and has agreed to conduct an internal audit to ensure future compliance with Vermont laws.
