The global economy is highly dependent on shipping to carry an estimated 90% of international trade volumes and facilitate key maritime economic activities such as offshore exploration and production of oil and gas, fishing and marine tourism. As these activities grow to meet the demands of an increasing world population and its insatiable needs for resources, shipping activities look set to intensify in the foreseeable future.
