Hefty fine for bunker oil spill

Derek Luxford, of Hicksons, reports on a recent case in Australia which resulted in a large fine for the owners

A recent judgment in New South Wales is a salutary reminder that marine pollution from ships in Australian waters can result in hefty fines for both the ship owner and relevant officers especially the master. As Australia is a federation of states the relevant legislation dealing with pollution in state waters varies from state to state.
