Disposing of cargo residues

The revised MARPOL Annex V, which took effect from 1 January 2013, prohibits the discharge of all garbage into the sea, with limited exceptions. Importantly, the prohibition affects the disposal of cargo residues and changes the way such residues are considered, especially when they are classified as harmful to the marine environment (HME).
