House of Commons report calls for more regulation of medical devices

The House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee has published a report calling for more regulation of medical devices before they are used on patients. Often devices are introduced using a “similar equivalence” test which means a device can be launched without proper testing of medical devices before they are used in humans. When the devices are faulty or defective the consequences for patients can range from minor injury such as swelling or pain to severe pain, disability and further surgical procedures.
