Food security: Famine spreads and food prices soar

HORN OF AFRICA: Four million people are in crisis in Somalia because of famine, with 750,000 people at risk of death in the coming four months in the absence of an adequate multi- sectoral response, the Food Security and Nutrition Working Group has warned. Post-harvest assessments have shown this year’s cereal crop is the lowest in Somalia for 17 years. Following two consecutive seasons of poor rains, crop production this year has been extremely poor in southern Somalia.
