Obscure, hidden, unknowable - all apply to the real quantum of fraud but the National Fraud Authority (NFA), realising the
only way to keep up the pressure, not least on Government, is to come up with some supportable statistics, has done just that.
The big number is UK£30 billion, the annual cost to the UK, which is more than double the last serious estimate by the Association
of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) in 2007; its study only referred to publicly available data and arrived at a figure of UK£13bn.
