JAMAICA LOOKS FOR COFFEE COVER FROM WORLD BANK
Jamaica has linked with the World Bank to develop a weather insurance programme that will protect producers of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. The study will create a risk-modelling programme that will assess the potential for catastrophe as a result of tropical storms. Jamaica Agriculture Minister Christopher Tufton said this week that it was difficult to obtain traditional cover because of the levels of losses experienced over the past few years. Coffee earns Jamaica about $30m a year and is one of its main exports.
