Insurance Day
West Virginia No.1 for deer collisions in US
DRIVERS in West Virginia lead the US in collisions with deer for the third consecutive year, according to
State Farm. One in every 39 drivers in West Virginia is likely to hit a deer in the next 12 months, the insurer has predicted; the probability
was one in 45 in last year’s study. Michigan ranked second, with odds of one in 78. Pennsylvania remained third on the list
with odds of one in 94, while drivers in Hawaii, unsurprisingly, have the lowest deer collision frequency: one in 9,931. Crashes
reach their peak from October through December – the deer mating season – and cause more than $1bn in vehicle damage annually,
the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety revealed in a separate study.
