UYGUR UNREST COSTS INSURERS CNY30.74M

Insurers in the northwest China autonomous region of Xinjiang Uygur will pay CNY30.74m ($4.52m) in compensation to the injured, relatives of those dead, and to those who lost property in the recent riots between ethnic Uygurs and the majority Han Chinese population. Officials at the Xinjiang bureau of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) said that insurers had received 184 claims on life and accident policies, totalling CNY3.65m. Claims for 106 burnt-out and 1,030 vehicles came to more than CNY16.2m, the CIRC said. Other property loss claims came to CNY10.84m. The riots left nearly 200 people dead and more than 1,600 injured during several days of riots at the beginning of this month.
