New health insurance levy causes further rift amongst market players

VHI welcomed the levy, which offsets the cost of insuring older policyholders, but its competitors were critical of the EU ruling

EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes has approved the levy on health insurance policies introduced by the Irish government from 1 January this year. She decided that the measure constituted “compensation for public services” and as such was consistent with Single Market rules.
