Investment gains help markets defy financial crisis

Premium growth may have slowed but investment income restored earnings in both life and non-life insurance markets

Results from several Latin American insurance markets for the first quarter of 2009 have defied predictions of deteriorating business conditions in response to the global financial crisis. However, results have been helped by recovery in financial markets during the beginning of this year, making it difficult to predict the outcome for insurance markets for the full year.
