Salmon farm claims in Chile
Intensive farming of salmon has been blamed for the presence of the ISA virus, which has decimated many farms’ stocks
Environmental groups in Chile have accused the salmon farming industry of deliberately releasing diseased fish into open waters
to claim on insurance policies. According to the environmentalists, the salmon companies have freed infected fish from their
pens to collect insurance payments, arguing that even with a 40% deductible, the option is preferable to culling the whole
stock.
