21.8, sinking, fatality

Sri Lanka: general cargo vessel Badulu Valley , carrying 3,609 tonnes of bagged rice loaded at Kakinada and consigned for Bangladesh, sank at Chittagong following a collision with chemical tanker Heng Zhou , which was lying at Chittagong outer anchorage undertaking repair works. Sixteen members of the 17 crew were rescued with the assistance of Chittagong Port Authority. The remaining crew member, the chief engineer, could not be rescued. Reportedly, the owner of the vessel was expected to reach Chittagong to decide the fate of the vessel. The value of the cargo on board was reportedly US$1.8mn. The cause of the incident had yet to be ascertained.
