11.8, sinking, fatality

Indonesia: one person was killed and three are missing after general cargo vessel Palangkaraya (291 gt, built 1961) carrying 17 crew members, 13 passengers, staple food and cement sank 11 miles southwest of Bawean Island, East Java. In addition, the vessel was carrying an ambulance for Bawean hospital, a car and 23 motorcycles. The authorities were investigating the cause of the accident. Two of the 26 survivors were rescued by Bawean fishermen, while the other 24 were rescued by three vessels, Express Bahari-8 B , Caraka Jaya Niaga-11 and Caraka Jaya Niaga-17 , which were sailing from Surabaya to Kalimantan. The survivors were immediately evacuated to Ibnu Sina hospital and Muhammadiyah hospital, while the vessel’s skipper was questioned by the police.
