Community of property

Reading and Exeter Universities are embarking on a two-year research project into the European concept of community of property under which marriage or registering a partnership generates a ‘community’ of certain of the couple’s assets that are to be split equally on divorce, subject to the interests of children. Professor Elizabeth Cooke of Reading University said: ‘Given the predicted ‘Europeanisation’ of our family law at some point in the future, we might be forced to adopt European methods for dealing with this legal issue, so it is vital to assess how they might work in England and Wales.’
