On-Line Barrister’s Clerk

Jan Wood, a barrister’s clerk, has introduced “virtual reality clerking” operating by email and fax as an independent clerk from her home in Exeter for barristers locally and from London, Leeds and the Isle of Man. She says the idea avoids chambers, travel expenses, chambers meetings and administration. “It also enables barristers to work from home, reducing overheads to a minimum”. Pleadings can be sent direct to instructing solicitors from barristers’ home computers. Conference facilities are available at instructing solicitors’ offices or at court. Access to libraries is available through the Internet. ACE software enables virtual clerking to generate fee notes and chasing letters in the traditional way.
