JUDICIARY

The Lord Chancellor has abolished the office of assistant recorder with the result that all serving assistant recorders have been appointed recorders. New conditions of service for part-timed judicial office holders provide that appointments will be for a period of not less than five years, subject to the relevant upper age limit and will be automatically renewed. Wherever administratively possible the number of sitting days will be guaranteed. There are five specified grounds for non-renewal of an appointment for conduct.
