Salvage - Whether shipowners and master have ostensible authority to enter into salvage contracts on behalf of cargo owners

Salvage services were rendered to the vessel Choko Star under a Lloyd’s Standard Form signed by the master of the Choko Star purportedly acting on behalf of the owners of the vessel and her cargo. The plaintiffs were the owners of cargo on board the vessel at the relevant time. They contended that the master had no authority to engage the salvors on their behalf, and that they were not liable to contribute to the salvage remuneration.
