Admiralty practice - Sale of vessel pendente lite

The plaintiffs issued a writ in rem against the vessel Gulf Venture for £409,926 for goods, materials and other expenses incurred by them as port agents in respect of the Gulf Venture and a sister vessel. The Gulf Venture was arrested. On 18 July 1984 Sheen J. ordered the vessel to be released on condition that the defendant shipowners put up security in the sum of £250,000. The defendants failed to put up security and the vessel remained under arrest.
