Is Katrina the new Andrew?

THE cost of Monday’s hurricane is estimated at between $9bn and $26bn. Clearly there is a huge variation in estimates but if the top-end figure is realised, hurricane Katrina will be the single largest natural catastrophe insured loss since hurricane Andrew in 1992. The big question at the moment is whether Katrina will have the same market-turning impact on the reinsurance market as Andrew.
