To recall or not: factoring in costs of scares

IN recent years there has been a sharp increase in the number of product recalls across Europe, the Sudan 1 recall of February 2005 being the most recent, high-profile example. This trend is likely to continue as the extent of regulation increases and companies become increasingly sensitive to potential damage to their brands from any quality or safety issues.
