THE explosion in consumer technology in the last decade is perhaps epitomised by the phenomenal uptake of mobile telephones. An elite toy a decade ago, a frustrating and expensive gadget five years ago, they are now such a part of our lives that for most the cliché "I couldn't live without it" is probably quite true.
