Insurance Day
Police “mock trials” prove worth
By Paul B Stevens
Risk management is an increasingly important part of any insurance professional‘s outlook. In this special report Insurance
Day looks at how it has developed and where it can assist in providing a better insight into both prevention and accurate
assessment. It also looks at issues such as reputation, which the insurance market has been slow to provide cover for but
which risk managers have been sensitive to for some time. It also looks at relevant issues such as Y2K and the legal implications
of the area. My firm has been involved for a number of years in representing police forces in the defence of civil claims
against them principally by members of the public. The number of these claims has been extremely low, relative to the vast
amount of police work carried out by the constabularies in their varied operational duties.
