Author Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in publishing with i-law. This guidance will explain the key processes and benefits of becoming an i-law author and should demystify the proposal process. If you have any questions that aren’t addressed, please feel free to email Richard Woolley, Commissioning Editor – Law, at richard.woolley@lloydslistintelligence.com

Why publish with us?

As the home of the Lloyd’s Law Reports (published continually since 1919) i-law can lay claim to over 100 years of legal publishing expertise. Today, our portfolio of over 200 books, journals, newsletters and reports are relied upon by legal practitioners and scholars worldwide.

As an i-law author, you will speak directly to this readership. Our publications are cited in court judgments, academic research and policy documents, and are used every day by law firms, chambers, corporates, and universities.

Your work will be assessed by a team of experienced editors and external peer reviewers. We are able to assign publications a digital object identifier (DOI) and can support authors with confirmation letters for universities and funding bodies, as well as with logging publications against continuing professional development (CPD) and competency requirements.

How does it work?

The publishing process has several stages, each with its own specific requirements, summarised below.

  • Proposal

Identify the scope of your project and where it would fit in our product portfolio. Complete and return one of the four proposal forms on our Publish with Us page.

  • Review and Revision

Our team of editors reviews how well your proposed project fits our programme. We consult with external peer reviewers on the contribution the proposed work will make to the field.

Where necessary, we may return the proposal to you and request additional information to help us with our decision.

  • Commissioning

If your project has been approved for publication, we will make you a provisional offer.

Once agreed, these terms will be codified into a formal contract, which will clearly lay out the expectations of all parties during the writing, publication and promotion of the publication.

  • Writing

During the writing process, our editorial team will be on hand to help in any way we can, from developmental and manuscript preparation guidelines to rights and permissions.

  • Editing

Upon receipt of the completed manuscript, we offer the full complement of editorial services, including copyediting, proofreading and cover design, working in close collaboration with authors throughout.

  • Publication

All of our publications will appear online first on i-law.com.

Books and journals can also be made available in print. If printed, authors will receive an agreed number of complimentary copies upon publication.

  • Promotion

Each new publication will have the support of our marketing team who will work with you to find the best way to promote your work online and in person, anywhere in the world.

Open Access

It is possible for the i-law platform to support author, institution or grant-funded (Gold) Open Access publishing for books and journals. We are also able support authors who want to self-archive the final, peer-reviewed version of their work in online repositories (Green Open Access).
