Few people at the time of the first powered flight in 1903 would have perceived that in little over a decade after this marvel, the aircraft would be used as a weapon of destruction against humankind. As we have seen in earlier chapters, even before the scars of the First World War had begun to heal, governments from around the world had gathered in Paris in a feverish attempt to draft universal regulations aimed at controlling this rampaging technology.
