21.8, Typhoon Sepat
Taiwan: Typhoon “Sepat,“ which subjected Taiwan to strong winds and torrential rain caused heavy losses for the country’s
agricultural sector. Over 90% of pomelos in Hualian’s Hegang has been destroyed by the typhoon, leaving estimated losses of
200mn New Taiwan Dollars. The heavy losses of pomelo in Hualian is expected to affect the supply of the fruit and drive the
price high. Local media reports predicted the price of pomelo will be three or five times higher than usual during the Mid-
Autumn Festival. “Sepat” also caused heavy damages to other fruits like bananas, water-melons, cantaloupes and papayas. “Sepat”
also destroyed agricultural and fishery facilities.
