Irish market reports increase in profits, premium income mixed

Underwriting results look strong against a background of declining rates but reserve releases boost headline profits

Results released by some of the leading Irish insurers sent out confusing messages as to what was happening to the domestic non-life market last year. On the one hand falling premium income was accompanied by a sharply improved underwriting performance but other companies had to rely on investment returns to bolster profits.
