EU rules favour UK insurers

British insurers with branches or operations in the euro zone stand to benefit from legislation adopted almost unnoticed in the runup to the 1 January completion of European monetary union. A new EU regulation on payments in euros will make it illegal for banks to charge more for handling cross-border transactions denominated in euros than they do for ‘domestic’ transactions.
