Worker forced to sue to pay for cancer drug

A former shipyard worker, aged 69, who is dying from mesothelioma, has been forced to launch legal proceedings against his former bosses so he can pay for the cancer drug Alimta, which studies show can slow the progress of the disease, according to the TUC bulletin “Risks”. The drug is available on the NHS in Scotland and in Liverpool, but can only be obtained privately in most other areas, at a cost estimated at about £24,000.
