Conventional sum not compensation

The House of Lords ruled that a mother with a severe visual disability who gave birth to a healthy child after a failed sterilisation operation was not entitled to claim the extra costs of bringing up the child, related to her disability. However, the Lords ruled that she was the victim of a legal wrong and it was appropriate to recognise this through the award of a conventional sum.
