Compliance Monitor
A quarter-century of Compliance
"So long, it's been good to know you." For decades, Compliance Monitor has been examining the eventful evolution of financial regulation in the United Kingdom. In its final issue, long-term contributor Adam Samuel reviews coverage of some of the twists and turns - through mis-selling scandals and redress schemes, the financial crisis, rule-making and deregulation cycles, the often politicised tool of enforcement, Brexit, and the transforming advance of technology.
Almost 23 years ago, I started writing for
Compliance Monitor and have been lucky enough to appear in almost every issue since. In my last piece, I thought that it might interest readers
to consider the topics that I wrote about, which highlight many of the key developments during this period. Some burnt a hole
in the financial services industry's collective subconscious, never to be repeated. A few related to temporary problems that
disappeared of their own accord. One theme, though, recurs: the Ecclesiastes line that "there is nothing new under the sun".
