Tobacco firm in US$12bn bond

A judge in Illinois has ordered tobacco firm Philip Morris to pay US$10.1bn for deceiving consumers by marketing light cigarettes as less harmful than regular cigarettes. The verdict includes US$3bn in punitive damages to be paid to the state of Illinois and US$7.1bn in compensation to the smokers of light cigarettes.
