Record asbestos payouts

Two recent asbestos cases in the US have seen record payouts. An Illinois jury ordered US Steel to pay US$250mn award to a former employee, a steelworker who developed mesothelioma. The verdict consisted of US$50mn in compensatory damages and US$200mn in punitive damages. The company is said to have settled for an amount significantly less than the compensatory damages amount.
