Introduction to LNG offshore production and regasification

Authored by Stuart Beadnall and Kirsty MacHardy

A Introduction

1.1 In this introductory chapter, we outline the elements of LNG offshore production and regasification with which we are concerned in this publication, and in particular we describe the types of vessel used and the main functions of these vessels, categorised into two groups: FLNGs and FSRUs. We present the specific characteristics of LNG as a product and how this may affect the relevant legal issues and the various parties involved in LNG production, transportation and regasification. We introduce the types of contracts used, with particular focus on the role of the specialist offshore contractor. And to put this into a market context, we finish this opening chapter with a look at the development of the LNG market over the last 50 years.
