In the early morning of 14 November 2023 the inland waterways motor tanker, Stela, owned by the defendant and carrying a cargo of Light Oxo Fraction, was on a voyage from Rotterdam to Antwerp. On her approach to the Port of Scheurhaven via the Calandkanaal she was sent a series of calls by Rotterdam port control to inform her that she was heading for the mole separating the port from the canal.
