Supreme Court judgment strikes blow against data breach class actions

The Supreme Court has granted Google’s appeal against a Court of Appeal judgment that allowed a class action against the company over unauthorised collection of their data. The landmark case, Lloyd v Google LLC [2021] UKSC 50, will be welcomed by data controllers who were potentially exposed to very significant potential liability arising from data claims, even if no specific damage was shown to have been suffered by any individual, according to one of the law firms involved.
