Welcome to Lloyd’s Maritime Law Newsletter, 1,000th issue

This is the 1,000th issue of Lloyd’s Maritime Law Newsletter. LMLN was conceived in 1979 as a complementary publication to Lloyd’s Law Reports. Lloyd’s Law Reports is considered the essential reference tool for shipping law practitioners but there was a growing desire for a separate, newsletter-style, publication that could circulate summaries of important shipping cases within a much quicker timescale.

At the same time, there was a move towards greater dissemination of London maritime arbitration awards. The Arbitration Act 1979, abolishing the old “case stated” procedure, had recently been enacted so that fewer arbitration cases would reach the courts.
