Hospital death from routine procedure
An NHS Trust has paid £12,000 in compensation to the family of a man who died after a routine medical procedure went wrong.
The man went to hospital complaining of shortness of breath and was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was told that a chest drain
would be inserted in order to help him breathe. However, the drain was placed too low, causing him to suffer a ruptured spleen
and massive internal bleeding, and he died two days later. The Trust initially denied liability but later admitted the mistake.
