The use of bareboat charters

Historical overview

II.1 The resurgence1 of commercial bareboat charters is fairly recent. Aside from a period of extensive use of demise charters during the Second World War,2 bareboat charters had largely fallen out of use by the mid-twentieth century. Such was the decline that in Sea & Land Securities Ltd v William Dickinson & Co Ltd 3 MacKinnon LJ pronounced that “a demise charterparty has long been obsolete”.
