Damages for losses caused by rioters: Riot Compensation Act 2016
With effect from 6 April 2017, the Riot (Damages) Act
1886 has been replaced by the Riot Compensation Act 2016. The 2016 Act
implements the recommendations of a review of the 1886 Act brought about by the
riots in England in 2011, which demonstrated a number of difficulties with the
law as it stood. There is no major change of principle involved in the 2016
Act, but there is additional protection for police authorities in respect of
damages claims.
