1 Introduction

This chapter is dedicated to some of the most relevant international conventions concerning the safety of life at sea and the security of ships, crews, cargo and ports. The Conventions discussed are very diverse but have a common leitmotif: they all focus on the human and technical element of shipping, aiming at preventing human error, enhancing the working and living conditions of seafarers and – in the broadest sense – preserving life at sea.
