On June 20, following more than 40 hours of intensive negotiations, the European Union ended a three-year deadlock over bank secrecy, agreeing to work towards greater co-operation among member states to tackle money laundering and tax evasion. Gordon Brown, the UK finance minister, played a key role, arguing that tax evasion would continue if some member states were allowed to preserve secrecy for non-residents.
