15.5, bloodstock losses
US: congressmen in Kentucky asked the US Department of Agriculture to help find a solution to the foetal loss syndrome affecting
the state’s bloodstock industry. The Kentucky Disease Diagnostic Centre reported that the number of stillborn foals and aborted
foetuses submitted for testing reached 468, and the industry is estimated to be facing a loss of $250mn. Scientists said it
was unlikely the reason for the deaths was to be found in the water or purchased feed, and were investigating a fungal mycotoxin
called zearlenone as a possible cause. Neighbouring states Ohio and Pennsylvania have also reported a higher-than-usual number
of deaths among foals. The bloodstock industry is important to the local economy. There are an estimated 12,000 people employed
at stud farms and the crisis could lead to up to 2,000 job losses.
