The 2001 reinsurance renewal season was unusual in a number of ways. It occurred late in comparison with previous years as the market struggled to come to terms with the issue of terrorism coverage and to clarify exactly what coverage would or would not be available. The fact that in some specialty markets reinsurers are more reliant upon retrocessional capacity than their counterparts in the property or casualty areas further contributed to the delay.
