Japan sets date for ‘third sector’ liberalisation

After coaxing by the US, Japan has moved to liberalise the so-called ‘third sector’ of its insurance industry. The decision will result in Japanese companies being able to compete with the foreign companies that currently dominate the market for accident and medical insurance. The decision will take effect on 1 January next year.
