Chambermaid wins £1,750 for unfair dismissal

A chambermaid has won £1,750 for unfair dismissal at a Jersey employment tribunal. She was sacked after returning home to Portugal to visit her sick mother. She had left at short notice, missing the Xmas and New Year period. She returned a few days later after her mother died. The tribunal ruled that her leave was unauthorised, but she had not been talked to by any of the hotel’s senior staff, nor had the chance to explain her absence.
