US asbestos fund is defeated in Senate

The US Senate rejected a procedural motion on the proposed US legislation for the creation of a $140bn national asbestos compensation fund. As a result, the asbestos-reform bill could be shelved for the remainder of the year. Senate majority leader Bill Frist said after the vote that proponents could revive the proposal before year-end.
